Let Your Light Shine.
“CAN’T YOU JUST FINISH ONE THING?” cried out my mother, in an exasperated tone from the other room. Her voice was coming from my childhood playroom. As I got closer, her voice became softer, but her frustration lingered. I assumed that frustration was from the state I left the room in (picture a tornado going through a toy store and you’ll get pretty close). Mom started gesturing to the different scenes in the playroom, “there’s a half-painted piece of artwork over here…dried out playdough over there…and five other projects you started but didn’t finish. Can’t you just finish one thing and then move on to something else?” Thus began my multi-decade reign as the Queen of Unfinished Things.
If I had a dollar for every diet I started and quit, every exercise program I tried for a few weeks then abandoned, and every book I’ve only half-read, I’d be a very rich lady. Things only got worse when I learned more about the inner workings of myself and determined “I can’t help it. It’s in my DNA.” Then I really owned it!!! After all, it was how I was WIRED! How could I hold myself accountable for that?
Since we all have to finish some things in order to stay employed, in relationships, etc., there have been many occasions when I’ve had to really buckle down and finish things. And boy do I love that sweet smell of victory! It feels so good to cross something off the to-do list or finish a huge project. But finishing things was also exhausting for me – it took so much energy to get to the finish line. I was determined to figure out why it was so hard to finish things and how to make it a little easier on myself, so I started reading dozens of articles and books, listened to podcasts, and explored whatever material I could find on goal setting, productivity, focus, habits, and a few other topics along the way, and here’s why: leaving things unfinished was getting in the way of me accomplishing my dreams. Not just childhood art projects, but big dreams. And I couldn’t stand the shame and regret I was experiencing from not turning my dreams into a reality.
